Overview
Savannah's best quality may be her layout, a grid of 24 public squares. Before any other sightseeing, stroll through these shaded patches of green. Along the way, you'll pass the ornate architecture and historic homes and churches for which Savannah is famous.
The Experience
Start with bustling Johnson Square, south of City Hall. By Oglethorpe Square sits "the most beautiful house in America," the Owen-Thomas House and Museum. The Isaiah Davenport House, on Columbia Square, sparked Savannah's restoration movement when its demolition loomed. Madison Square boasts the Green Meldrim House, Savannah's finest example of Gothic Revival architecture and one-time headquarters of General Sherman. Monterey Square is bordered by Temple Mickve Israel, and the Mercer House, made famous in "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." Also see beautiful Lafayette Square, scene of a three-tiered fountain, the Andrew Low House and the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.
