Love it!!.
I have had breakfast there every time I visit Savannah! Love the waffles! And if you haven't tried it yet, you have to have the croissant with ham and brie : ) Love it!
Clary's is always close no matter where I stay. Always a short walk. Service is good and I am always on the lookout for familiar characters from the book : )
Just okay. Lunch in November. It's just okay. Not as good as you think it's going to be. My hamburger tasted like it was made from 'hamburger' meat, not chuck or better grade of beef. Caesar shrimp salad was wilted and just okay for taste. Chicken soup was very good.
Are you kidding, this place is overrated. I don't understand why and how the rave review of this diner. The food is nothing to write home about, just the typical greasy breakfast. The price is around $10 for breakfast without drinks. We had the cornbeef hash and country fried steak. The cornbeef tasted odd. Oh, we also had the grits. My grits came with extra protein (those darn flying insects). Service was decent, but I don't understand the 5 star.
The best breakfast ever!!.
This place is awsome!! I sat at the counter and was immediately served!! the menu has some of the most mouth watering items, it was impossible to choose. The portions are enormous; the food hot and freshly made. I enjoyed the homey, non commercial feel of the place - that's how you meet people! Hands down they have the best grits I have ever had!! I didn't need to add anything to them! When they say ham, it's not that little piece of ham you get in a biscuit! Your ham is at least 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick and taking up half of the plate!! An overall outstanding experience!!
I've read complaints about the parking in other reviews, but sometimes, when it comes to a great establishment, having a big parking lot or dining room is not always better. That's when the focus moves away from the food!! I like this place a lot, it's like being at home in mom's kitchen with a bunch of friends and family hanging out!!! Excellent!
Great food but small space and pricey! Go it 's worth it though!. So I work for a famous hotel, and every holiday season they give us a chance to stay at most American hotels for 2nights free of charge. So as a last minute decision me and my boyfriend decided to go to Savannah. Since we live in Atlanta it was extremely convienent but also a "getaway." Firstly, let me say, Savannah is so cool! I thought it was absolutely beautiful, maybe i was just so happy to get away, a cave would've sufficed, but i thought it was gorgeous( we went in December, not too smart, but still nice!) Savannah has a weird street layout, its like every street has a "square" its so freaking weird, you drive straight down one street, and then around a "Square" really cool, but weird and confusing. So once u make it pass the 3 or 4 "squares" Clary's is a little pharmacy looking place. Parking IS TERRIBLE!!! the lot holds like 10 cars(lol) seriously. You'll have to make it work though. Inside is small as HELL!! I swear u can tell it was not meant to be a restaurant, but i'm not knocking it. I was taking a "break" from my diet so i ordered the most fattening thing "pancakes" and cheese eggs. My boyfriend ordered cheese eggs, toast, and sausage, each of us drinking orange juice, his large and mine small. They fix ur food quick, and everything is real, no milk carton eggs or anything. The pancakes are GINORMOUS!!! i swear they are 10inches around. OMG! i ate 2 and almost burst! They are good though. The food is great but EXPENSIVE AS U KNOW WHAT! A large o.j is 2.79 and it's like 10ounces. and a small is 1.79. All i had was 2eggs with cheese and pancakes. My boyfriend had 2eggs with cheese toast and 2 small sausage patty's and the tab was 25.00. kind of pricey for what we had, but it is good, and at least i can say " i ate at Clary's!"
Greasy Spoon with attitude. Great short order place, expect to have a coronary right after. Staff are Savannah natives with attitude but in a fun way. This was the diner that John Cusack went to in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Prices a slightly higher than a run of the mill short order, but the location isnt exactly a truck stop, in that its deep in the heart of the high rent Historic District. Great place to start your day if you are sight seeing.
Not all it's cracked up to be :). I live right by Clary's so I go there at least a couple times a month because it's convienant but if you are visiting I would not recommend going there for the food! The food really isnt that good and the service is so so......it's also over priced.
You go for the sake of saying you have been there.. Clarys is a place you either love or you hate it. The place has a loyal following of locals and students, all them characters. There is also the steady flow of tourist with the book in hand. Service can be right on or a miss, depending on the time of day and season. I have had great meals and poor service and average fare with the greatest staff in the world.
Locals and tourists rub shoulders--and bellies--at one of Savannah's most infamous eateries..
The Scene
A former drugstore made semi-famous in John Berendt's "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," Clary's now sports a stained glass rendering of the novel's dust jacket inside. Locals congregate for breakfast and gossip; tourists visit in droves for a taste of the "Midnight" lore. Whether you sit at the soda fountain bar or in the dingy main room, you're likely to overhear at least one conversation about "the book" that put Savannah in the spotlight.
The Food
Breakfast is what Clary's does best: fluffy pancakes, fat omelets with a variety of fixings, not-too-runny grits. Lunch choices are abundant and mostly solid. A triple-decker club sandwich with crispy bacon must be dismantled before it'll fit in your mouth. Shrimp salad on a croissant is fresh-tasting, with a nice hint of dill. Dense malts from the fountain are a pain to suck through a straw, but definitely worth the effort.
Must go. I lived a block from Clary's in Savannah. My friends and I had brunch there every weekend. The food and the prices are great. Dont miss the apple cheddar omlet for brunch. The eclairs are heavenly as well.
